She wrote seven popular, critically acclaimed books about her journeys to remote Native communities and about her life as an artist—as well as her life as a small child in Victoria at the turn of the last century. Emily Carr was a Canadian artist and writer known for her expressive paintings of coastal forests in British Columbia and the First Nation tribes that lived there. In some of her best-known works Carr depicted both totem poles and towering trees with a reverential eye. Emily Carr, (born Dec. 13, 1871, Victoria, B.C., Can.—died March 2, 1945, Victoria), painter and writer, regarded as a major Canadian artist for her paintings of western coast Indians and landscape. Emily Carr was a Canadian artist and writer inspired by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. As one of the first painters in Canada to adopt a Modernist and Post-Impressionist painting style, Carr did not receive widespread recognition for her work until late in her life.
