The Burgess Shale Formation in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia is one of the world's most celebrated fossil fields, and the best of its kind. It is famous for the exceptional preservation of the soft parts of its fossils. It is ~505 million years old (Middle Cambrian), one of the earliest soft-parts fossil beds.. The rock unit is a black shale, and crops out at a number of localities 2020-03-02 The Burgess Shale is a fossil-bearing deposit exposed in the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, Canada. It is famous for the exceptional preservation of the soft parts of its fossils.

A cliff collapsed, burying all the specimens. Only some of the species survived. Anomalocaris and Hallucigenia were first found in the Burgess Shale, but older specimens have been found in the Chengjiang fauna The Burgess Shale.

In Canada, sites featuring Burgess Shale fossils are found in Yoho and Kootenay national parks. The Burgess Shale hike in Yoho National Park has been on my radar for years. Most of the appeal – before I actually did it, was the fact that the Walcott Quarry where the Burgess Shale fossils are located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and I love checking out UNESCO sites.

De flesta djur bryts snabbt ner när de dör,  att organismerna från Burgess inte alls var så märkliga och varierade som de kunde Det hela slutade med att fossilen från Burgess Shale senare befanns vara  Studies are trickling out on the fauna of early Cambrian, as you certainly know (Gould, 1989) fossil sediments in shale deposits (such as the Burgess Shale in  Fyndet gjordes i närheten av Burgess Shale som anses vara en av de viktigaste platserna på jorden för fossilerade växter och djur. Det nya  Hallucigenia was first described from the Burgess Shale in southeastern British Columbia, Canada.

The Burgess Shale is a series of sediment deposits spread over a vertical distance of hundreds of metres, extending laterally for at least 50 kilometres (30 mi). The Burgess Shale fossils are some of the oldest and most complex in the world! They are so important that they have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

They are significant because of their age, about 505 million years old; because of their fine detail, which preserves the soft parts of ancient organisms; and because some of them are the remains of creatures that contributed no descendants to the modern world.
